Call for submissions

The editorial team at Strife are excited to put out our first call for submissions!

We are a student-led platform, dedicated to the study of human conflict and security, and its many broad definitions. We’re thrilled to welcome contributions that engage with conflict in its many forms – especially work that offers original, diverse, and interdisciplinary perspectives of the world around us.

We are currently accepting a range of submission types, including short academic articles, current analysis pieces, opinion essays, interviews, and book reviews. Full submission guidelines, including word counts, formatting expectations, and ethical standards, can be found further down this page.

Submissions should be sent to strifemagazineuk@gmail.com as an editable document. We warmly encourage submissions from post-graduate students, PhD researchers, and early-career researchers connected or affiliated with the KCL Department of War Studies, as well as practitioners working on issues related to conflict and security.

Strife Submission Guidelines

The overall theme of the blog is human conflict and security, broadly defined. Strife’s thematic focus is ‘conflict’ in all shapes, forms, and senses of the word, utilizing political, historical, literary, and philosophical approaches to conflict (among others) for blog readers. We will emphasize unique and diverse perspectives and approaches in our posts.

Types of Submissions

At this time, the following types of submissions are welcome.

Academic Work: Short academic work ranging from 2,000-4,000 words. This can be a condensed version of longer work. The work, while providing some depth, should prioritize clarity and brevity to ensure that it is coherent and intelligible to a range of audiences.

Current Analysis: Analytical articles under 3,000 words will be accepted. These may be more in the format of a news or magazine article, delving into a topic in-depth without more extensive academic elements such as a literature review.

Opinion: Op-Eds under 1,000 words will be accepted. These posts will be clearly labelled as the opinion of the author and should present a specific viewpoint on an issue.

Interviews: Interviews with relevant practitioners, policymakers, academics, and subjects with lived experience will be accepted; however, we advise that you consult with Strife staff prior to conducting the interview to ensure it meets the goals and requirements for publication.

Book Reviews: Reviews of recently published or otherwise relevant books will be accepted, typically ranging from 1,000-1,500 words. Submissions should critically engage with the book’s central arguments, methodology, and contribution to the field, rather than offering a purely descriptive summary. Reviews should remain accessible to a broad readership while demonstrating analytical rigor and situating the work within its wider scholarly, policy, or practical context.

Other: Other formats and types of submissions will be considered and reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Ethics

Strife operates around the following ethical standards.

Accuracy: Contributors are responsible for the factual accuracy of their work.

Plagiarism: Unattributed use of other people’s work is unacceptable and harmful not only to the author but also to the reputation of the magazine. Responsibility for any plagiarism will rest with the author.

AI policy: Strife is a platform for original student work. AI use in line with KCL Level 1 and 2 standards is acceptable; however, if Strife staff determine the work leans too heavily on AI or was written in part by AI, we reserve the right to deny the submission. AI images will not be accepted for publication with the written work. If you have any questions about this policy, please reach out to discuss this further.

Rights: All text published on Strife’s website will be under a Creative Commons license, whereby work can be quoted or reproduced elsewhere as long as it is properly attributed and linked back to Strife, and as long as it is not reproduced for commercial use. (For details on CC licensing, see brief summary and Legal Code.). Unless otherwise informed, we assume that submitted articles are offered for exclusive publication in Strife and that no piece accepted for publication will be published elsewhere simultaneously in any form without our knowledge.

Conventions

The new Strife staff are in the process of formalising style standards; however, APA, Harvard, and Chicago style are generally acceptable. All sources must be cited, either with in-text citations and bibliography or via direct links.

How to Submit ?

Please email your submission to strifemagazineuk@gmail.com. Submissions should come in editable Word or Google doc formats (no PDFs). Your email should be clearly marked with the type of work and “submission” in the subject (e.g. “Analysis Submission” or “Academic Submission”).

Please send an accompanying copyright-free or original image with your text, if possible. Images are not to be inserted into the text, but are to be sent as a separate attachment. If the image is from the internet then please send a link as well. A brief author’s biography of no more than three sentences is also required.

Your article will be returned to you with feedback from our editorial team. If your article is selected for publication, then it is your responsibility to review those comments and ensure you send back a ‘clean’ version of the article which is ready to publish with no tracked changes remaining.
